The Silver Line is generously supported by a number of trust and foundation partners and undoubtedly we would not be able to provide support for the thousands of people who contact our helpline or participate in friendship services without them.
Through these invaluable donations we have been able to establish a 24 hour, 365 days a year service which now receives over 1,500 calls every single day. The majority of these calls – seven out of ten and often from the most distressed – are received after 5pm and at weekends, socially important times when other services are closed.
Our thanks go to Comic Relief for providing a vital grant enabling the regional pilot of the service in the North West and IOM. A grant from The Big Lottery Fund was invaluable in allowing the charity to launch nationally in November 2013 and establish services and through a further grant in 2015 to continue maturity into a trusted and significant part of the fabric of care options for older people across the country.

“The loneliness and isolation of older people is one of the last big taboos – from individuals talking about how it affects them to society in general admitting that it is very common. ChildLine continues to transform the lives of so many children and has done so for the past 27 years. I believe that The Silver Line will make the same significant difference for today’s older people and future generations by promoting dignity and helping to prevent the neglect of vulnerable older people.” Peter Ainsworth, Chair, Big Lottery Fund
“We have been delighted to support the pilot stages of The Silver Line and believe that this initiative will significantly improve the lives of older people who so often struggle to access the support they need.” Gilly Green, Head of UK Grants
It can be as much as 3 days I go without talking to anyone, I am an optimist by nature and sometimes I need that to get through another pointless day where I feel as if I am a waste of space… I dread the winter nights when everything seems to close in around me and I feel so isolated.
