Dame Esther Rantzen calls on BBC and the Government to keep free TV Licences for over 75s

The debate about free TV licences being scrapped for over 75s continues as last week the House of Commons media select committee stated the BBC and the government should find a way to save free TV licences for all over-75s. Dame Esther Rantzen appeared across a variety of media outlets, including BBC Breakfast and ITV News to add to calls for the BBC and the government to reach a solution. Read the full story here.

The Silver Line welcomes the government’s support in helping to tackle loneliness

The Prime Minister has announced the government’s acceptance of a series of recommendations from the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness, and laid out their plans to tackle loneliness and combat isolation. Helpline for older people braces itself for surge in calls on longest night of the year

The Winter Solstice on Thursday (21 December) is set to be the busiest-ever time for The Silver Line Helpline since it launched in November 2013.  Two-thirds of calls to The Silver Line  are made at night-times and weekends when people are feeling even more alone and vulnerable. Busiest month since launching

The Silver Line announces a milestone 1.5 million calls received, and August 2017 as its busiest month ever – with calls coming in at a rate of more than one per minute. Saturday August 5th is a new record day for the year with 1634 callers in 24 hours. However, as demand for the service keeps rising, so does the need for donations to cover increased running costs. No holiday from loneliness

As thousands of us leave for summer holidays, the situation for isolated older people does not change and in fact for many their loneliness is exacerbated.  Calls to the helpline increased during the first week of the summer getaway. Read the full press release here

H.R.H. The Duchess of Cornwall becomes Patron of The Silver Line

To coincide with her 70th Birthday, The Duchess of Cornwall has agreed to become Patron of The Silver Line Helpline, a charity launched by Dame Esther Rantzen in November 2013. The Helpline offers information, friendship and advice to older people around the clock and all over the UK, with its free, confidential service which is open 24/7. Dame Esther Rantzen, Lorraine Kelly and Angie Best have teamed up with JD Williams to raise money for The Silver Line

The Silver Line charity founder Dame Esther Rantzen, TV presenter Lorraine and ex model Angie Best have each chosen a ‘Silver Line edit’, their favourite outfit from JD Williams’ SS17 clothing range, with 30% of the sales of these products going to the charity, which relies entirely on voluntary donations. The Silver Line joins organisations to launch the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness

The Silver Line is proud to be a member of a coalition carrying on the work of the late MP Jo Cox – The Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness. On 31 January, we joined MPs, policymakers, and other groups to launch a new campaign to tackle loneliness, which has been set up in the late MP Jo Cox’s name. The Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness aims to expose the growing crisis of loneliness and look for practical solutions to reduce the harm to individuals, families and the nation. The Commission will also target businesses and employer organisations and look at what action local and national Government can take to combat loneliness.

The Silver Line Helpline overwhelmed by calls across Christmas and New Year

In the period between Christmas Eve and January 2, we received over 15,000 calls from older people. But our helpline was only able to answer two-thirds – leaving over 5,000 callers entirely on their own when they desperately needed someone to talk to.
