The Silver Line Helpline is the only national, free and confidential, helpline dedicated to older people which is open every day and night of the year (and crucially overnight and weekends when other services are shut). We offer older people, information, friendship and advice – or just someone chat to. Our helpline team can also direct people to groups and services in their local area that might be of interest or benefit to them.
90% of our callers live alone and over half of them speak to no one but us – sometimes for days or weeks at a time. 80% of callers every month are phoning us for the first time.
Since launching in November 2013, we have taken over 1.6m calls – currently averaging a call every minute – and demand for our services keeps rising…
As the number of callers to our helpline grows, we need volunteer support to help ensure that we can keep in touch with everyone who has asked us to.
We need volunteers who can work from our helpline in Blackpool to make short and friendly calls to older people – and help us to make a difference to older people up and down the country.
These calls act as a reassurance to many older people that there are people out there who care about them, and we make over 1000 of them every week.
There is training, and on-going support provided for this role, and we ask for a minimum of 3 hours a week commitment for a minimum of twelve months where possible.
